I am Dr. Shakera R. Carroll, a Family Medicine Specialist practicing in The Bahamas. In 2006 I graduated from the University of The West Indies (Mona Campus) with my medical degree. I then completed Internship and spent an additional two years as an Internal Medicine Senior House Officer.
During this time I saw many patients being repeatedly admitted – and in some cases dying – from preventable chronic illnesses. Unfortunately, because of the busy pace of inpatient services, there were limited opportunities to educate these patients and get to the root of why their conditions had deteriorated to that level.
This was my motivation to pursue my Specialty in Family Medicine; as I believe that health promotion and patient education are key components of taking control of one’s health.
I subsequently obtained my Diploma, Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Family Medicine from the University of The West Indies School of Clinical Medicine and Research, Bahamas Campus (UWISCMR) in 2013. This training – which included conducting research and numerous public speaking engagements – as well as continued medical education, have equipped me to provide comprehensive, holistic and most importantly, individualized preventative and primary care services.
Over the years, I have served in several leadership, supervisory, administrative, and academic positions. I was also actively involved in community outreach, which included giving health talks and organizing health fairs.
Currently, I work in both the private and public health care sectors, and serve as an Associate Lecturer with the UWISCMR. You can review some of my clinical services below. I am also available to provide health education for corporate and civic groups.
